This highly visible position requires you to take charge and supervise aspects of the industrial maintenance department, including Maintenance Mechanics, Personnel, Purchasing, Machinery Repair, Preventive Maintenance Systems, etc. The Assistant Maintenance Manager is responsible to ensure that the daily M&R tasks are carried out as scheduled, within budget and in a safe manner.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains a preventative maintenance program for all container handling equipment utilizing manuals as well as PC based tools.
- Assists in managing the maintenance team of ILA Foremen and Mechanics in performing diagnostic troubleshooting on all container handling equipment.
- Monitors the quality of repairs.
- Interprets production reports and their use in improving operations.
- Interfaces with terminal operations management and union personnel to develop the most effective ways to operate equipment.
- Purchases and maintains proper spare parts in inventory that will balance tying up capital with minimizing equipment downtime.
- Maintains a schedule to maximize cleaning effectiveness of all machinery
- Maintains proper inventory of chemical cleaning supplies for container handling equipment.
- Interfaces with operations personnel to allow repairs to be made to minimize impact on production.
- Controls fuel costs through effective monitoring of machine performance and operation schedules.
- Maintains safety programs.
- Updates technical publication library (equipment, blueprints, schematics, etc.).
- Process bills promptly, resolves billing issues and informs A/P of billing disputes.
Education and Work Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in the skilled trades or equivalent technical background.
- 5 years minimum experience in a high-volume maintenance environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with current EAM required.
- Strong Electrical/Mechanical aptitude.
- Experience with Maritime Container, Chassis & Refrigerated Container Cargo Repairs
- Experience with Container Handling Equipment (Top Loaders, Reach Stackers, Terminal Tractors, Forklifts, etc.)
- Previous supervisory experience is desirable.
- Previous experience working with Unions preferred (ILA, ILWU, Teamsters, etc.)

Physical Demands:

- Work involves climbing at heights at or above six feet.
- Must employ the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety policies.
Work Environment:
- Some exposure to extreme weather changes and humidity/moisture relative to atmospheric condition variations. Includes exposure to extreme summer temperatures, as well as rain.
- Possible exposure to dust, chemicals, gases, fumes, smoke, excessive noise, and/or vibrations.
- Work generally performed in an office environment. Regular trips to the field are required that includes various hazards and noise exposure.
- Travel may be required for assignments, meetings, and training.
- The job also requires availability for rotating on-call schedule, occasional unscheduled callouts, and extended workdays and/or workweeks.
